Freeview Play Recorder FVP-5000T 500GB (Refurbished) Reviews

4.2 Rating 452 Reviews
I have been using this FVP5000T for about a month now and although it works its far from ideal Firstly it is very fussy about signal levels with the result that you get no signal reports quite regularly. I get an average signal of 70 to 80% @ 100% and have had no problems with my Samsun or Panasonic TVs but the PVR drops signal almost daily with the result my TV link is dropped and I get no TV direct picture, also why the link is EE and not direct beats me .I had to install a small distribution amp to overcome the problem. Secondly user menus leave quite a bit to be desired, why dose channel search not default to favourites once they are set? I think maybe the design was rushed and not enough time was spent looking at the user experience. In saying all that the unit performs well and does what it says on the box mostly

Not quite as slick or fast as the Sky box it replaced, but a close second best.

My experiences having used it for a couple of months and also several older 9200T models. Pros Can usually watch recordings the phone app Recordings list shows all recorded and scheduled episodes under one title Accurate recording does not just record the pre-programme ads and not the programme on ITV (unlike 9200T occasionally) Not limited to 20 repeating schedules like 9200T You can list any recordings you have started watching Cons No picture-in-picture like 9200T Cannot view the recordings list when playing (play stops) Frequently needs mains power off/on to re-instate the backward EPG Live TV sometimes hesitates You can’t see a playing programme info (no dedicated info button). You have to Stop (which shows it), Play then select Continue where you left off. Getting ITV Hub to work is problematic Phone / tablet app: Cannot delete a recording once watched Cannot skip forwards (past ads) The app time slider does not show the recording length (it’s huge) and dragging it stops play Sometimes it does not list recordings or play a selected recording (whirling circle icon)

It arrived well packaged and undamaged. Installed it in parallel with previous BT badged Humax which has been misbehaving but is still nearly full of recorded programmes. The new remote was totally changed which caused a lot of initial problems - functions were labelled differently and familiar keys had different functions, however the new remote also controlled the old PVR so parallel operation was not practical and watching any of the programmes on the old PVR requires recabling. Contacted Humax about copying library from old PVR to new PVR, via USB if necessary but apparently this is not possible by design. Apparently it is not even possible if internal HHD is removed and installed in a caddy. Once I has mastered the new remote keys the new PVR performed better than its predecessor though it has quirks I do not like, or maybe there are some secrets I have not yet discovered. The programme guide jumps in 2-hour blocks but depending on the time the guide was opened these can be from half past to half past the hour rather from hour to hour. Deleting recordings is not done with a special delete key but by moving to one of the blue blobs on the screen and clicking OK, get the wrong blue blob and you can delete a recording instead of playing it. It does not always distinguish between repeats when recording a series, The main problem with the old PVR was that it frequently went into hibernation and did not wake up to make recordings, needing to be rebooted from scratch each time, This seemed to be a software problem associated with updates and thankfully this new PVR seems much better having only done this once since I have had it.

I was surprised at the condition of the unit it is as like new and works faultlessly, the only fault I have with it is no digital read out on the front and the light is underneath the front of the unit making it hard to see other wise excellent.

Delivered on time. The box was easy to setup. I find it very easy to navigate. Great that netflix has its own button and loads fast. I had the old foxsat for 8years. But like this aerial freesat better
