Freeview Play Recorder FVP-5000T 500GB (Refurbished) Reviews

4.2 Rating 452 Reviews
Excellent picture and features but let down badly by the start up which seems to take forever, to a point I wonder if it’s started. Also another annoying thing is that the start/standby light cannot be seen as it’s underneath the unit.

Bought as a replacement for an older Fox T2 recorder Reconditioned product looks as new and value for money. Easy to set up although a few teething problems with recording which were solved with a re-tune

Recorder arrived next day, very well packed including all accessories and manual. I could not tell this was not a new item. Very pleased.

Basically an excellent machine and it excels in having 3 tuners and the ability to record 4 programmes (and play another recording simultaneously. However, all is not perfect, the machine is a little slow in responding to commands and the Freeview Play catchup process is not always displaying immediate past programmes. Personally I can live with that since the main catch up apps all work without any issues. Curiously, although in the settings you can set a number of ‘skip’ For Advancing through advertising in programmes I can’t anywhere in the device instructions how to do that. It needed a visit to YouTube to work it out since it oddly is now a two button command rather than the one on earlier machines. Last but not least is the issue of the led status light which is fitted at the front facing vertically downwards and is invisible from the front! A simple fix of sliding a small piece of white paper under the led works perfectly, but why should the user need to do that and it costs this device one star!

The ability to record 4 programmes at once was the reason for the purchase and this it does but the systems used in making recordings, viewing recordings and playing/deleting them are so much more involved than the recorder it replaced that we are still having problems with them. Maybe in time we will forget how simple the old one was.

unlike other product which we have had from Humax during the last 10yrs this one seems a bit dated, and sometimes the various screens don't appear at the first press of the hand-set button. On many occasions they are also a bit obscure because they appear over another screen. there are other curiosities with this particular item, and, as it is "refurbished" I don't know how old it is. I feel that this particular item is a little "pricey".

Good points: Compact unit, excellent picture and audio quality, multiple tuners enabling 4 recordings at a time, wireless wifi connection giving access to catch up services and apps. Bad points: Cheap plastic casing, tiny led on base of front panel means it is almost impossible to tell if unit is in standby or on, no one button press 24hr forward on tv guide ( now need to press multiple buttons multiple times ), unit often slow to respond to r/c commands and worst of all what appears to be a manufacturing defect in the aerial loopthrough which causes intermittent signal loss when watching TV with the PVR in standby. A replacement unit, eventually supplied, had exactly the same problem. Based on online forums, this has been a known long term problem with several successive models, which can only be cured by use of a aerial splitter, thereby providing independent feeds to the PVR and TV and making the loopthrough redundant. Humax advice on this known problem was very poor to non existent.

Does everything it says, although our older version seemed more user friendly
