Humax FVP-4000T 2TB Freeview Play Recorder (Nero) Reviews

3.9 Rating 71 Reviews
I've had a Humax PCR for some time, based on recommendation by ?Which, and been very happy with it. But, its storage capacity was limited. So, again based on the current ?Which recommendation, I upgraded. Setting up was easier than with the earlier model and the box is functioning well. However, there are a couple of 'niggles': that which could easily be solved with the present configuration is to vet the instruction manual and make it more 'dummy' friendly. So, for instance, the instructions for setting a Favourites list of channels is incomplete and caused a certain degree of frustration and a message to the Helpline. The other 'niggle' may be a function of a settings choice that I haven't discovered, but, as it stands, the Guide is superimposed on the existing (moving) screen and is less easy to read than the Guide of my previous Humax. Notwithstanding, this is an impressive PVR and its footprint is impressively small.

Not bad as a replacement for last 9200 Humax, can record up to 4 things at once, but.... 1. No 'info' button to flick to details of recorded or guide programmes. 2. Bit slow changing channels 3. Won't remain on favourites - go to guide and it's reverted back to 'TV' with all the dross (QVC, etc) 4. On demand has not got TalkTv - even LG telly has! 5. On demand is limited to broadcast catch-up and obscure Humax nonsense.

The hardware is quite good, but there are a number of issues with the software and your ability to move around using the remote. For us the unit replaces a Humax MyView box which had a fare better menu system on. This machine has a lot more images and fewer details displayed on the menus and is not as easy to navigate. On the “guide” you cannot display an item’s program details without moving on to it, once it has started. If I’d have played with one before buying, I wouldn’t have. Our previous experience with Humax was good, this is disappointing.

The user interface is rather sluggish and has a tendency to freeze, requiring a power off (unplugging) to clear. Not keen on the UI design either. But it has a lot of storage and will record 4 channels at once as advertised.
