There’s a wide range of pet food options on the market today. Dr Karen Becker view is that a species-appropriate, balanced raw food diet is the best. But depending on the sources you use for ingredients, or the recipe you use, a homemade diet can easily be deficient in important nutrients, even if you choose wholesome ingredients. For example, chickens raised outdoors have plentiful amounts of vitamin D in their liver but factory-farmed chickens reared indoors are severely lacking. Today, more and more animals and even plants live or are grown indoors.
Much of the soil that our food is grown in is depleted of trace minerals and certain vitamins. Crops grown in depleted soil end up being deficient as well. When animals eat these crops, they simply don’t get the micronutrients and minerals they need for good health. So is it no surprise that your cat or dog may be deficient too if they are eating food that’s naturally lacking in the nutrients needed for good health.
At any age, your pet also needs a healthy gut, for efficient digestion and absorption of food and nutrients.
Many pet foods say that they are “complete” and “balanced” but was does this mean? While certain foods provide minimum standards for the pet food industry, it doesn’t address the quality or source of ingredients, or how well your pet’s body will be able to utilise the nutrients. An inexpensive pet food with a low percentage of protein in the form of rendered meat by-products and a high percentage of grains and starches could be certified as “complete and balanced,” right alongside a premium food made with human-grade ingredients, and with optimal ratios of protein, fat and moisture.
How to Get Optimal Nutrition?
Adding human foods to your pet's diet is a simple and inexpensive way to boost its nutrient value.
Dr Karen Becker’s advice and that of other holistic veterinarians is, if you can’t feed a species-appropriate diet made with fresh, whole food ingredients, choose a basic food with wholesome ingredients. Forget the fancy additives and add your own high-quality, human-grade supplements. In the long run, you’ll save money and your pet will end up with a healthier diet. Not only do additives drive up the cost of the food, they also increase the potential for unwanted chemical interactions. And they can shorten the shelf life of the packaged food.
You can do this by adding foods like eggs, meats, blueberries, sardines, and leftover vegetables can dramatically improve the nutritional value of your pet’s food at little extra cost, especially if you’re already buying these foods.
And for added reassurance add probiotics, digestive enzymes, and immune-promoting foods to help make sure your pet’s gut and immune system remain in top-notch condition; such as is found in this new product - Whole Food Digestive Probiotics for Pets.
So why was Whole Food Digestive Probiotic for Cats and Dogs created?
It’s a cost-effective, light formula and this “all-in-one” powdered supplement covers the nutrient basics for healthy pets – digestion, gut health, and immune health and includes four key blends for maintaining total body nutritional health:

Probiotic blend of 8 valuable strains of gut-healthy probiotics selected especially for your pet’s gastrointestinal and immune nutritional health. Every 1.5g scoop includes 15 billion CFU.
Digestive enzyme blend from papaya, pineapple and porcine pancreas to provide digestive support for any type of food you feed
Superfood and green food blend, including spirulina, fermented chlorella, broccoli sprouts, and turmeric root powder for nutritional immune support and overall vitality
Mushroom blend of highly valued Reishi and Chaga mushrooms to provide nutrient antioxidants, polysaccharides, Beta-D-Glucans and other nutrients for immune system balance and healthy cell growth

Probiotics: Probiotics are live microorganisms that live in your pet’s gastrointestinal track, and on her skin, lungs and other organs. They’re even inside your pet’s nose and mouth. Probiotics are considered “the good guys,” or good bacteria.
For optimal health at any age, you pet needs the right balance of good to bad or pathogenic bacteria and a probiotic supplement can help achieve that balance. Especially when diets are high in carbohydrates (as many commercial pet foods are – particularly kibble), the wrong type of bacteria can flourish, starting in your pet’s mouth. Carbohydrates and starches are harmful for your pet’s teeth and his gut. The addition of probiotics can help promote a healthy balance everywhere.
Probiotics are important for your pet’s digestion and utilisation of nutrients, and especially the immune function as about 80 percent of your pet’s immune system resides in the gut. Even your pet’s brain health may benefit from probiotics. Your pet’s gut is her ‘second brain’ and is filled with neurons or nerve cells. By maintaining the proper balance of beneficial bacteria in her gut, you’re helping to promote healthy brain function.
Enzymes: An animal in the wild truly gets a "balanced and complete" meal. When animals in the wild kill prey, they truly receive a “balanced and complete” meal. They get everything they need to digest their food, absorb the nutrients, and to thrive. Above all, they receive live enzymes from their prey.
Enzymes are essential for every metabolic process in your dog or cat’s body – and not only for digesting food.  When given at mealtime, digestive enzymes help break down protein, fats, fibre, and carbohydrates into their usable components. Between meals, enzymes go straight to promoting immune and cellular health.
Your pet’s body was designed to get some of its enzymes from food. Because most pets live on processed diets that are devoid of enzymes, and we don’t feed them prey complete with guts, the vast majority is enzyme-deficient.
Even if you feed your pet a homemade diet, if you heat the food over 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, you destroy any valuable, live enzymes.
So when your pet receives too few enzymes at mealtime, they may not be able to digest his food properly or absorb nutrients, and that can lead to issues with digestion and overall health.
Superfoods: Whole Food Digestive Probiotic contains some of Dr Karen Becker’s favourites as well as one relative newcomer that holds exciting potential for your pet’s health:

Spirulina: is a nutritional powerhouse as it contains one of the highest concentrations of nutrients of any plant, grain or herb. And it’s composed of easily absorbable nutrients – vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Spirulina is the closest thing to a multivitamin of any food that I know of. Because it is so loaded with nutrients, it excels at nourishing your pet’s body if her diet is nutrient-deficient. Whole Food Digestive Probiotic contains 200 mg of spirulina per serving.
Fermented Chlorella – a near-perfect food and when fermented, this normally difficult-to-digest food becomes digestible and available to your pet. The fermentation process helps to unlock chlorella’s nutritional bounty by breaking open its tough cell walls. A variety of fresh water green microalgae, chlorella boasts well- balanced ratios of proteins, nutrients, vitamins and mineral, and a special type of growth factor – chlorella growth factor which is rich in nucleic acids. As your pet ages, levels of nucleic acid in her body decline and can threaten her immune health. Chlorella has abundant amounts of the natural detoxifier chlorophyll and is recommended to support your pet’s detoxification processes to help her liver and kidneys clear away any build-up of heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and other toxic substances. Whole Food Digestive Probiotic contains 500 mg of fermented chlorella per serving.
Broccoli Sprouts: contain high concentrations of two important antioxidants for cellular, detox, gut, joint and immune health: glucoraphanin and sulforaphane. These These two potent antioxidants stand out for their long lifespans and ability to recycle and actively scavenge free radicals in your pet’s cells. Broccoli sprouts contain far more of these active compounds than regular broccoli. After three days of sprouting, broccoli sprouts contain 10 to 100 times the amount of glucoraphanin – the precursor to sulforaphane! Whole Food Digestive Probiotic contains 300 mg of broccoli sprouts.
Turmeric Root: Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its flavour, yet it’s been studied for years for its health benefits, being the focus of over 6,000 studies! Along with its active compound, curcumin, turmeric offers a multiple of potential benefits for your pet’s nutrient health. It can help:

Promote a normal healthy inflammatory response -Support normal healthy cell growth and development
Maintain a healthy gut
Promote comfortable movement and flexibility
Support organ and tissue health

Whole Food Digestive Probiotic contains 200 mg of turmeric root powder.
Medicinal Mushrooms – acting as tonic for your Pet’s liver and Immune System
A relative newcomer to the western world, the Chaga mushroom has been used for hundreds of years in Asia and Siberia. The Chaga mushroom grows throughout the frigid forests in the Northern hemisphere, mostly on birch and other hardwood trees. It grows as a black protrusion from the bark, but inside it is soft and rust-coloured.Chaga is considered an antioxidant rock star. It contains a multitude of immune system-supporting antioxidants, such as polysaccharides, Beta-Glucans, phytosterols, Superoxide Dismutase or SOD, and two components unique to Chaga: Betulin and Betulinic Acid. Infact the Chaga mushroom is sometimes called the “King of the Medicinal Mushrooms” These two triterpenes are found only in Chaga mushrooms and are a result of the symbiotic relationship between the Chaga and the birch trees on which they grow. Powerful therapeutic substances, betulin and betulinic acid are currently being studied for important roles in medicine, based on very encouraging animal study results.
The better-known nutritional mushroom, Reishi, is considered to be the premier balancing herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM. Reishi is valued for its ability to help regulate and fine-tune the immune system. This means it can both support your pet’s immune function if it needs a helping hand and it can help normalize an out-of-control immune response, like what happens with allergies.
Together, Reishi and Chaga mushrooms can potentially help maintain your pet’s nutrition though:

Healthy normal immune function
Healthy blood flow and circulation
Liver health

My cat used to get upset tummy sporadically and it was not easy to understand why. He was put on sensitivity control food which made things better, but outbreaks of upset stomach still happened sometimes. A friend recommended the product (I use smaller than recommended amounts and sprinkle it on his wet food with crushed treat on top - he used to be reluctant at first but now is used to it and eats it no problem) and since introducing it 3 years ago he has not had a single episode of upset stomach!

The delivery was fast and I had no problems with the store. The product itself appears to be very good based on the ingredients (asked a vet for opinion). However, it is insanely green and remains visible when mixed in with the food. For some animals, that might not be an issue, but the ever cautious and suspicious furball completely and utterly refused to try it.

I have seen quite a difference in my bigger lab having less ear infections. She is older and does seem to be a little more playful and seems to be feeling better. An excellent combination in this formula
