“I was initially convinced it was broken or junk, but after more testing I found the pH reading is directly proportional to the length of the probe that is inserted into the soil. However, the instructions don't make it clear how much of the probe should be inserted in the soil. I found inserting the whole length of the probe into the soil gave readings close to those I got using a pH test kit, so that would be my recommendation. However that also comes with a disclaimer because if the contact area of the probe is affecting the reading, then the reading would presumably also be affected by how dense the soil is? I will continue to use this as it is quick (1 minute) and convenient, but I can only consider it suitable for an 'advisory' or approximate pH reading. (I will use it to keep an eye on changes in pH). For a more reliable reading I would recommend the Soil PH Testing Kit K181, also sold by Green Gardener.”
