Cytisus or brooms are deciduous or evergreen shrubs which originate from Europe and Africa. They have palm shaped leaves which are mid-green in colour. Cytisus can become leafless as they mature emphasising the beautiful flowers. Flowers are pea like and can be highly fragrant.
They are followed by mid-green, downy seed pods which can be sown in autumn or spring to propagate. Cytisus are ideally grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in a shrub border.
