Berberis or barberries are deciduous mound forming shrubs. They have bright attractive foliage and bear small red to yellow berries in autumn. Berberis Harlequin have attractive reddish pink leaves marbled with white, small red tinged pale yellow flowers, followed by red berries in autumn. Berberis have plenty of prickles so are commonly used as a security hedge.Barberry shrubs range in size from dwarf species suitable for rock gardens to larger specimens which are ideal for a shrub border. Berberis are easy to grow and maintain, respond very well to being trimmed. Berberis should be trimmed after flowering to maintain a neat shape. They are fully hardy shrubs which grow well in most well-drained soils. Berberis Harlequin is a compact shrub with heavily mottled pink, red and purple foliage with soft pink flowers and crimson red berries in autumn they can reach a height of up to 1m.
