Where to start with these. Thousands have used these I'm told, with no problem, but this was my experience... These are labelled as, 'Hand-held Fountains' on the packaging. I checked the website and was reassured they were for lighting the fireworks. • The 'firework lighter' is in fact a small roman candle. It is neither attractive as a firework due to noxious smoke, and completely over the top for lighting the firework fuse. • The first thing it did was fill my lungs with smoke and as an asthma sufferer, I hoped that it did not bring on an attack. • It behaves more like an out of control cigarette which drops burning ash. Even though I wore thick suede gloves the burning ash dropped onto my thick lumberjack shirt, burnt a hole through that and burned my arm. The burns on my arm are still there 5 days later. It also dropped burning ash onto my suede shoes. • The portfires burn far too fiercely and were in danger of lighting the extremely thin outer paper of the firework before you got it to the fuse. • They burn for far too short a time. I got through all 4, long before the firework show was over, resorting to my using a cigarette lighter which the wind often blew out. On several occasions, I'd go up to light the firework, only to have the portfire extinguish itself on me. One time, it was when I was on the top step of a 5 step ladder, trying to light a massive Catherine Wheel which was 10 feet from the ground. I retreated, to find another portfire, leaving the crowd to assume the firework had been lit, and that it did not work/revolve. I than had to explain that the problem was with the lighters. • I spent half the time worrying about what the lit firework in my hand was going to do next, not enjoying my display! Around 40 years ago when I first bought a box of poor quality fireworks, the one thing that worked well was the bit of rope that lit the blue touchpaper. It worked better than the fireworks did. These days it seems the reverse is true. Whilst I appreciate the blue touchpaper has been replaced by a fuse with powder rolled into it, there needs to be a far better lighter. Something like that bit of old rope that burns with a glow for a long time is safer, lasts longer, doesn't put smoke in your lungs and isn't a hassle.
