Fjällräven's Expedition Down Lite is a superb jacket for the colder days of a UK winter, especially for those spending prolonged periods outdoors but not necessarily engaged in strenuous physical activity. I bought the jacket primarily for use at the launch point of my local gliding club, which is situated on an exposed ridge-top airfield some 920ft above sea level in northern England. We don't fly when it's raining, so water-proofing was not really a consideration . . .. although the shell material should prove resistant to periodic light rain and certainly to snow. On the jacket's first outing, worn over a merino base-layer and a thin technical mid-layer, it kept me toasty all day in continual 15-25mph winds that produced wind chill temperatures down to -6°C; hence, no concerns regarding windproofing. Delighted to find that the jacket's shell material feels much tougher than I'd anticipated - certainly more durable than many other insulator jackets that I'd looked at from other brands - and that the jacket has a reassuring quality feel and weight to it. The downside of this: the Expedition Lite is not the ideal choice to wear (or to pack in the stuff sack provided) for a day's hiking in the mountains - you'd be better off layering with thinner/lighter insulation and a separate shell jacket for such activities. The bulk also means you'll need space to hang or store the jacket during the warmer months! Capacious pockets inside and out - and the rear-entry hand-warmer pockets are a godsend. The jacket's (mainly) goose-down filling provides a more 'natural' feeling warmth and breathability compared to fully synthetic insulation . . .. this is especially noticeable when you get out of the wind or go indoors. For instance, the jacket felt comfortably warm but never too hot when worn strapped into the cockpit beneath a perspex canopy during a couple of 20-minute glider flights. I tried the hood up a few times - ample, well-shaped, cossetting and warm. But, as I prefer to wear a separate beanie or bobble hat, I mainly wear the jacket with the hood down where it still keeps the neck warm and where the press stud on the back of the neck keeps it in place and stops it flapping about. Fjällräven's sizing is spot on for me - size XL is perfect for a 44"/112cm chest. Arm length is good too; and in any case, the press studs at the wrist allow for a bit of adjustment. Whilst expensive, the Expedition Down Lite is undoubtedly the real deal - it focuses on substance, function and practicality, unlike some rival brands which rely solely on 'label' to justify a high price. Overall, an excellent high-quality winter jacket for static or less strenuous activities on cold winter days . . ... and even better if it can be found at a discounted price (thanks to Fat Buddha Store).
