This was bought as a direct replacement for an older fan - also Xpelair GXC6 - that stopped working after decades of daily use. It is hardly the same product, but the good news is that it is now in regular use having gone in the same factory-made hole in the window and used the same fixing technique. That last was important because we were able to remove the old and fit the new in this first-floor window without using a ladder. Some other makes need screws to be turned from the outside and that would have been much more difficult. These fans use a metal strip like an unrolled jubilee clip that you tighten with an inside screw. Less good: this fan initially behaved like the very old one in failing to run when the cord was pulled and needing a tap to get it going. After a week or two it has loosened up and works properly (touch wood). Almost disastrous: the pull cord relies on knots at each end to fix it. At the handle end, we found it very difficult to make a knot big enough to stop it from pulling through (the manufacturer's knot made the handle hang much too low). The near disaster, though was that the end fixed within the fan housing came free after the cord had been pulled a few times. Very lucky that an extra sheet had been provided with the instructions including photos that happen to show the path of the cord within the housing. Using those photos we were able to re-fit the cord correctly. (It goes through a hole that is very difficult to see when looking at the installed fan, and we would never have guessed it.) Because that sheet was clearly an afterthought I have uploaded scans of it with this review in case that helps other customers. Comparisons with the old model: The old GCX6 had to be earthed and used a screwed cable grip to take the strain on the 3-core mains flex. This new version does not use an earth and so works well with a thinner flex. It takes the strain on the flex by wrapping it around a curved path that was too tight for the old flex. The instructions give specifications for the flex, but forget to say anything about the necessary flexibility. The old GCX6 was easier to fix to the window because you first fitted a pair of plates to the inside and outside and then bolted the fan assembly to the inner plate. Now the inner plate and the fan assembly are combined as a single component - a bit trickier to fit. The new cover takes more force (and practice) to remove and replace. With the cover off, the fan blades are more accessible for cleaning - and for injuring fingers if you forget to cut the mains power. HTH

The pull cord does not work. Had to get the electrician twice which cost me money. It still does not work. It is bad system and especially the putting the cover is very cumbersome

After fitting the fan did stop working a couple of days later. I did complain to the makers who dealt with My query and supplied a replacement without fuss.

First fan received had a faulty pullcord switch and a couple of missing small parts, Tabs and slots for "clipping" internal grille onto fan assembly are flimsy, awkward and poorly designed.
