The pull cord operates the motor electrical switch and opens the internal anti-backdraught shutter. When it works, it's fine. I have had a previous fan by the same manufacturer which used an identical type of dual purpose switch, and it was this which failed because it would not turn off. On taking the old switch apart, the shutter open and close mechanism seemed to me to be rather flimsy; I think its long-term reliability could be improved by incorporating a switch of more robust design. When buying the new fan, I did not know that the pull cord would be operating an identical type of switch; I only discovered by taking the new fan apart after purchase. Following my earlier experience, I would therefore be cautious about recommending this particular fan. I suppose its cheapness reflects its possibly dodgey performance, but then being cheap, one can afford to replace it.
