Sevenstones Shrub Co is sailing shrub back into the 21st century to provide you shrub lovers a quality, small batch and hand made offering. Made using fresh citrus fruit, natural sugars and local botanicals, they have set out to make premium quality, small batch runs of original Cornish shrub cordial. Traditionally partnered with dark rum, it’s also pretty good with soda water over ice. Golden honeyed appearance. On the nose it is a lightly spiced and aromatic cordial with a hint allspice berries and cardamon aromas. On the palate this is a traditional shrub with citrus fruits on the front followed by bitter notes of cinnamon bark and rock samphire. A perfect partner to darker rums or added to sparkling tonics.History:The history of shrub dates back to the 18th Century. Its popularity was mainly due to the rise in smuggling caused by high taxes put on imported spirits. Cornwall’s rocky coastline scattered with secluded coves was the perfect location for landing cargoes of contraband. To avoid the excise officers, barrels of rum would be cast overboard and hidden on the seabed where later they would be retrieved when the coast was clear. This however often led to the barrels’ content being tainted with salt water, of course no good reason not to drink it! This is where ‘shrub’ fits into the story, the addition of the sweet, citrus shrub cordials were used by the Cornish to mask the briny aftertaste of the tainted spirits and enhance the taste of the rum.Citrus and samphire shrub cordial is made from a carefully selected blend of botanicals, herbs, spices, honey, citrus fruits and hand foraged local rock samphire, an aromatic flowering plant which only grows on the cliff tops within reach of the sea spray. The rock samphire delivers a peppery addition to the sweet cordial.Perfect Serve:2 parts quality dark rum 1 part shrub.
