Aim: To provide shelter for pets and less hardy plants from weather, especially during winter and particularly from the easterly and north-easterly winds experienced occasionally in the east of Britain. In practice it is anticipated that the screening will be in place for about 7 months of the year and be removed during the summer to allow cooling air to circulate.
Planning: As the canopy is only attached to a single-skin brick wall the screens are designed so as not to add significant weight to the load-bearing wall by being self-supporting on the paved base. The thickness of the acrylic sheeting depended on whether it should be frameless and self-supporting or require a frame for support. If sufficiently thick to be self-supporting then the weight may make it difficult to manoeuvre. If too thin then the large expanse of sheet may lack sufficient rigidity, even with a frame. It was decided to use 4mm sheet with a supporting frame.
Construction: Each of the three large clear acrylic sheets measured H:1950xW:1550mm and framed with 19x30mm section treated timber. The fourth sheet, being much smaller (H:1050xW:700mm), was unframed and supported by a worktop. To protect the frames from weathering and maximise space beneath the canopy the screens were attached with the acrylic sheet on the outside. Attachment of the frame to the acrylic sheet was by machine screws/nuts at cross-halving joints and screws at regular intervals between the joints, finishing with screw caps & covers.
To avoid the bottom edge of the frame deteriorating from contact with wet ground the screen was raised on plastic beading screwed to the base. Although suitable plastic beading, as such, was not available from DIY stores, a suitable substitute was electrical ducting with a wooden insert to prevent crushing the ducting and sealing the ends with silicone filler.
The screens were attached to the canopy using wing-nuts to large washers and screwed onto coach-bolts fixed to treated timbers screwed/bolted to the canopy.
Conclusion: The screening took just a few days to erect and although not yet tested with the full force of winter, it appears to fit the intended purpose very well.”

“The sheets were to be used as an upper level "board" for my train set so I wanted something that allowed sight of the items below.
As I had not seen nor ordered these before it was difficult to guage the correct thickness and thus rigidity but the sheets ordered were exactly as anticipated if not better with excellent clarity & quality.
The edges were however still rather sharp even though these had been diamond polished.
They arrived well packaged & protected within a excellent timeframe.
