The deal I initially received was good, but as soon as I changed car my policy went up to way in excess of what I would have been quoted elsewhere and because I was already tied in it would have cost me more to cancel. Also they charge a £25 admin fee to change car (which in the end I had to pay 4 times as I changed from one car to the other twice). This is unreasonable for the 2 mins it takes to change a reg number and email a .pdf! When the renewal came through it was over £100 more than the offer I could have got with Hastings themselves if I cancelled and started again and nearly £200 more than the quote which I did take up with another insurer. When I phoned to tell them I wouldn't be taking them up on their auto-renewal they didn't seem to be at all bothered or try to engage me in any kind of conversation about why I might be leaving or offer a deal to keep me. They said they would email me confirmation of my cancellation which never happened, then I got an email saying 'thank you for renewing'! I had to contact them again to ensure it wasn't going to be renewed and each time I had to ring them I was on hold for a very long time. I'm just glad I didn't have to make a claim! Overall I get the impression they offer a competitive quote for new customers but once they have you, they sting you any way they can. I guess they must already have so many customers on their books that losing one or two in the process doesn't matter to them either or they would try harder to keep the ones they have. I'm sure this is not unique to Hastings but I certainly will not be using them again.
