“There was a long queue at the Hertz/Firefly desk, filling the roped area; service was slow. It took about an hour to get the keys. By this time, the queue was 3-4 times longer, stretching back through the terminal – unlike that for other companies. The insurance amount we had pre-selected did not appear in the selection, so we had to pay rather more. The map to find the car was so poor that it took us over ½ h to find it – and we found several other Hertz customers in the same state. The car was OK and well-designed except for its awful gear-selector (the worst I have found in 56 years of driving from 3-wheel Reliants to artic-cabs). On our first bit of tricky road (at the opposite end of Iceland) I found that the switch would not stay in 4wd lock but just flicked back to auto when I let go (contrary to the handbook) – so I do not know whether 4wd worked, but it did not feel like it.”
