I strongly advise anyone against using Europcar at Lyon Airport or indeed anywhere. At pick-up the Europcar team seemed only concerned with trying to upsell me a bigger and more expensive car than the one I had ordered. We didn’t take it. I asked for someone to come and look with me for damage to the car we had in fact booked - but they said they couldn't/didn’t need to. We were given a list of 5 bits of damage in difficult to decipher English (and French) on our reservation form but with no diagram of where they were on the car. I was told to take photos of anything they had missed. I quickly checked the car as best I could but did not spot anything. We drove straight to the house we were staying at and then back without using the car in the meantime and without any accidents or incidents. But on return Europcar spotted some minor wheel rim damage which we DEFINITIVELY didn’t cause. It clearly had been missed by the pre-hire check (and to be fair by us - but we are not experts in inspecting cars for wheel damage and we were keen to get going on our holiday). When we challenged the damage, and said we hadn't caused it and that it must have been there when we picked up the car, the attitude of the Europcar staff was unsympathetic and combative. The guy actually said “you’ve got insurance I don’t understand why you’re worried.” We didn't want to sign the damage form as we didn't cause it - but they said that without signing it we could not claim on insurance and our deposit could not be processed. So rightly or wrongly I signed it. As it happens I had bought insurance excess cover but that is not the point. It is a matter of principle for me. WE LOOKED AFTER THE CAR AND DID NOT DAMAGE IT. The damage had clearly been missed in the pre-hire check. We may have insurance but it is a real hassle to claim it back. The attitude of the Europcar team throughout was arrogant and totally unsympathetic. It felt like we had been scammed - we/the insurance company will probably be charged for the damage but no doubt the damage will not be repaired (like the other 5 bits of damage) and either the next renter will have it added to the list of 5 pieces of previous damage which have probably been charged but have not been repaired, or alternatively perhaps it will not be added to the list in the hope the next customer will not spot it either so they or their insurance company can also be charged for it? It honestly feels like that. I contacted Customer Service in the UK but this had no impact. Since then I have had to change credit card as someone attempted to take money from my account in the name of Europcar. Avoid Europcar at all costs.
