Schönburger 2024 Reviews

Tasting NotesBiddenden’s sandy loam over clay soil coupled with modern winemaking techniques, all help to produce this exclusive, single varietal sweet fruity wine.Light blush in colour, this sweet wine is made with late harvest grapes which have been left on the vine to develop higher natural sugars. Flavours of honey, lychee and elderflower adorn this lusciously rich white wine. Schönburger grapes grow particularly well in the UK, because of our maritime climate. The grapes are pale and plum coloured, and have a very high sugar content. With good acidity they produce a very fruity full flavoured wine. ...with fine Kentish strawberries you need a fine Kentish wine, such as this from Biddenden Vineyards, the first to be planted in God’s Chosen County in 1979. Made from late-picked Schönburger (a cross beween Pinot Noir, Chasselas and Muscat Hamburg especially suited to Kent’s climate and soil), it’s a delicate, pale strawberryish hue and deliciously juicy and honeyed on the palate, with just a whisper of citrus and elderflower. It’s not unctuously, richly syrupy like a Sauternes – something that would overwhelm the pud – just lightly sweet and deeply refreshing and uplifting. It matches the cake perfectly and a mouthful of one just leads to a mouthful of the other until both are gone, gone, gone. – Jonathan Ray, Drinks Editor. The Spectator
