Espelette pepper is a very exclusive French Basque spice protected by a French AOC and one of the most popular spices in modern Parisian kitchens. Whole peppers have a beautiful red-sunset hue and are very fruity with a medium heat. After carefully drying the peppers, they are pulverized into a fine powder that has a million and one delicious uses from sweet to savoury.
Traditionally, Espelette pepper is used as part of the curing process of Bayonne hams but nowadays this amazing basque pepper powder is used to spice honey, sprinkled on poached eggs for breakfast or even used to add a kick to chocolate or desserts.
Espelette pepper is also used as the starring ingredient in lots of traditional Basque dishes - from a piperade sauce to chicken basquaise.
