A cult gin from Mahon in Menorca, Xoriguer (pronounced sho-ri-gair) is one of the only gins in the world alongside Plymouth to have a geographical indication, Gin de Menorca. It was first made for the Britsh Sailors who were stationed on the Island between 1708 and 1802, who were hankering for some gin. Xoriguer is still made in the same way, according to the 18th century recipe, commanding a devoted following of happy travellers. Gin Xoriguer is the result of a distillation in traditional copper stills, using high quality wine alcohol (eau-de-vie) and carefully selected juniper berries, which come from the neighbouring Mediterranean mountains, together with aromatic herbs. These herbs are the guarded secret of Xoriguer gin's original bouquet. Only the Pons family know the identity and proportion of this valuable ingredient, which is added behind closed doors and without witnesses, at the start of each distilling. The respect for tradition is such that the fuel still used today in the distillation is wood. Gin Xoriguer is briefly stored in casks before being bottled. Xoriguer is the key ingredient in Menorca's most popular cocktail drink, called pomada. An authentic pomada is made from Gin Xoriguer, lemonade and ice. 38% ABV / 700ml

A little taste of sunshine - whilst waiting for our trips back to Menorca. Just won best gin in a martini award - but try it with fresh lemon twist, rosemary & Med light tonic

You can keep your fancy flavoured gins for me. This is proper gin, with a fragrance that comes from the juniper scented Menorcan countryside, smooth and complex, versatile enough to drink on its own, as gin tonic in the heat of the day and Pomada at fiesta time. Delicious and definitely my favourite.

A gin which is refreshingly different - but without the addition of flavours - fruity or otherwise - which detract from the essence of a gin - ie juniper. It has fresh herbal hints and is unusual as it is made from grapes not grain. Sit back with a G & T made with Xoriguer, lots of ice, a twisted slice of lime and a simple tonic water - nothing fancy - and all you will need is a bowl of boquerones to transport you to that perfect spot on the harbour at Es Castell....

I bought this for a friend as a birthday present, so no idea what the gin tastes like, but it is his favourite of all the gins. More importantly, the first bottle arrived smashed in the box and the delivery guys, UPS, had simply sealed the wet box and broken bottle in a bag. I contacted Basco, who immediately came back to me and I received a replacement the very next day...no hassle and extremely friendly. Thank you Basco!! I'm a big fan now and will be telling my friends of your excellent service :-)
