“The 120 hour course was really education, had a good selection of modules and different learning points. It was very inclusive to a range of different backgrounds. My tutor was fantastic throughout, gave really good feedback and even included some extra tips or resources for me. This would be excellent for a starting teacher as getting to grips with lesson plans can be difficult. Only improvement would be to revise the word count, particularly on the shorter assignments. You’re very limited on what you can actually say in 75 words, I think people starting out with teaching would struggle with these. The feedback I got with the additional tips were already points I would have wanted to say, just couldn’t fit them into my answer and although I was able to answer them well first time, it was difficult to limit yourself especially with the nature of the questions. The assignments themself were great, very relevant however the word counts I think need to be changed slightly. Maybe make 75 words the minimum and 150 the maximum? Having minimum word limits would be good for starting off teachers too. Altogether it was a great course.”

“A complete course, with a good foundation in grammar, and extensive training in methodology and pedagogy focusing on student centred. The grammar is very well structured, building the concepts as pieces of a building that is completed and expanded in depth. The methodology is well documented with the great support of the tutor, who analyzes your work in depth and helps you with commentaries, giving additional resources. The modules in teaching large groups, video observation, and telephone courses, are also very interesting. I have learned and enjoyed the course and it is an unbeatable platform to start your adventure as a foreign language teacher.”

“When I started the course, my main objective was to learn about English grammar. It was a nuisance that I also had to learn about how to plan a lesson and about learning theory, etc. But the techniques I've learned (encouraging students to self-correct, peer-correct, learning about concept questions, consciously thinking about where to elicit, where to do something active, different approaches to teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing, learning how to create an environment where students feel safe, learning about options I can use like realia, visual aids, feely bags, etc.) have made me a much better teacher. (I've been teaching English for a few months on a voluntary basis). It is very different teaching large groups, teaching online, etc. and I'm glad the course anticipated the problems I might run into for me. Also the feedback provided for the essay parts of it was really constructive. It helped me understand points that weren't making sense before. The only thing that is a bit annoying is that it's difficult to navigate the course bundles available to download at the end. It's not easy to locate the '79-Hour Methodology Course Resources' pdf if you don't save it immediately. Overall, though, really good.”

“Fantastic course. There was a lot of information to process however, there was help if needed all the way. I am already starting to use my new skills as the course has allowed me to progress in my current job. I would recommend the course to anyone thinking of teaching. Units are nicely set out and easy to understand. There are also many knowledge checks on the way to check your progress. I found this helpful. My tutor was very quick in responding and all feedback received helped me through the course. Thank you.”

“I like the course and the way it's structured. I've already wrote some thoughts about particular courses in their respective feedback sections, but in general I can say that if you can add some video explanations to the assignments it would be really helpful. By that I mean add some video examples of assignment works, not only the written ones. Also, the feedback on your mistakes and errors could be more informative. You get explanations from the tutor, and it's great, but when it's quizzes and not a tutor marked assignment you barely know what was exactly wrong, very uninformative to be honest.”

“I would recommend TEFL.org to anyone who asks. As I am working (Dutch and as of this academic year English language acquisition classes at an international school), I liked the online course because it allowed me to work at my own tempo and my own time. The way the course was put together still had a classroom feeling due to the videos and you didn't get a feeling that the course was a second class course. As a qualified teacher, there were some sections that were not new for me (writing a lesson plan etc) but I could see how the explanation would prepare non-teachers to become ESL teachers. The tutor was very accessible and prompt in answering emails. Even though I have been teaching Dutch for many years, I will take a lot from this course into all my teaching.”

“I found the teaching methodology, grammar modules and video observation courses useful but the other two modules included in the package I purchased seemed to be 'filler' courses with no real substance. (Telephone Teaching and Teaching Large Classes) The testing in TEFL.org is geared to the teacher -- for ease of marking and in my opinion, it should be designed for the student. Why would the assignments in the most important courses have a word count limit of 100 - 150 and the assignments in the teaching large classes and telephone classes have a 600 word count? It is important for students to acquire the basic teaching skills initially before proceeding to the other courses. If a student had to develop a detailed lesson plan for either the teaching methodology or grammar course, rather than worry about a word count, it would be more helpful to future lesson planning. The bulk of the testing is in a true/false format. Although it is easier for a teacher to mark (and I find completing written assignments overly stressful), I have never felt that this type of testing really shows a student's deeper understanding of the subject matter. I think that maybe you could offer a package to students with a couple of elective courses they might choose to make up the bundle. I will NEVER teach a large class because I prefer one-on-one tutoring so I found the Teaching Large Classes to be a chore to complete. (I would find a course on how to set up a home-based TEFL business useful.) Calling the course I completed 'Telephone Teaching' is outdated and the course name ought to be changed. Watching certified teachers conduct lessons was very helpful -- keep the videos in the course. Your podcasts and blogs are great -- hearing real stories from real people is invaluable. Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience of studying with TEFL.org.”

Hi Heather, Thank you for posting a review and we’re sorry to hear that your experience was not of the quality you expected. Our courses do certainly follow a strict structure which ensures that we continue to meet the high standards of our accreditors. We do still find many people around the world don't have easy access to the internet or still use Skype etc. We therefore try to make sure that our courses cover this in Telephone Teaching, so that teachers have the tools to provide English lessons to everyone, no matter where they are in the world. Many teachers also go on to teach in large classes, so the skills learned in these units can be invaluable. Following our accreditation criteria, we also ensure that the assignments given meet these standards. Our shorter units only have one assignment each, whereas the longer Methodology unit requires 5 assignments ranging from 100 to 600 words. There are also quizzes throughout our courses but these are used as a revision tool. We also offer shorter and advanced courses separately, such as a stand-alone Video Observation Course or Grammar Course for example. “I do think the process of getting the certificate was not bad, it was the corrections and information that was provided to the tutors to fix things. The writing assignments were the most difficult due for me, and also considering not know how to make lesson plans while trying was rewarding!”
