“Having been both a teacher and youth worker and now working in adult education, I have done more first aid courses than I care to remember. The quality of them over the years has varied, from being gore-fests run by ex-ambulance staff glorying in all the grisly cases they have dealt with to mind-numbing sessions of Death by Powerpoint. This course was different. Part One was an extensive online module that took the whole day to complete. It also contained a lot of new information about hazards I had not encountered before. I mean, who knew about button batteries, and the threat they pose to children who swallow them? What was particularly good about this part, was that each chapter was concluded by a test of learned knowledge. I can honestly say that it is the most extensive online course I have done. Part two was the in-person part. Now as I said, sometimes the tutors of this part of the course can go on a bit of an ego trip, carousing their audience with lurid stories of all the bloodthirsty cases they have dealt with. Not so our tutor. Our tutor was clearly someone with extensive subject knowledge. They gently guided us through the things we needed to know and to be reminded about. You forget how difficult doing CPR can be. But we also dealt with choking, burns, scalds and bandaging. Now again, normally this part of a course can lead participants to clock watch as they resignedly think 'I know this stuff, why oh why do I have to do it again?'. Not so on this occasion. The time flew by and that is due entirely to the tutor's ability to read and engage with their audience. So, all in all, a very enjoyable day, in which I refreshed my knowledge and added a great deal to it.”
