“I got the subscription as a gift and I absolutely love it! The whole idea of picking a book without knowing the title or the author makes it so much more fun. The lovely wrapping makes it a real pleasure receiving the book each month.”

“I enjoyed my three month subscription with Rarebirds. The only downside was that two out of three were American authors, I'd have preferred more variety and also quite short. But I'd definitely recommend others giving the subscription a go. It's great to read things you wouldn't normally pick up, and have the surprise and book through your letterbox.”

“Extremely disappointed with Rare Bird who accepted my £150 gift purchase via it’s online app, but then informed me 2 days later that they couldn’t accommodate my request and were processing a refund. Had the app not accepted my order, I would have looked elsewhere. Beware - read all of their FAQ’s before placing an order or you will be disappointed like me and the recipient (NOT) of my gift purchase. To Rare Bird - fix your front end order system...don’t put key details in an FAQ which is buried at the bottom of your web-site. Will be discouraging as many people as I can from using this company.”

“Really good customer service, friendly and polite. However the website and subscription could be improved. I received the subscription as a gift and when I did my first order I could fully see how much the person as spent which is not really nice and ideal.. Plus I had to spend a £18 extra for the delivery! The gift subscription needs to improve!”

You’re not the first person to say this and it’s something we’re working on fixing right now while we’re building a new website. The additional delivery fee is because you're an international subscriber and we're based in the UK. “Be warned that if you buy the subscription as a gift for someone, they will see how much it has cost when they do their initial signing-in. Also be aware that when posting comments on a book, your full name is shown. There should be an option of a user name for this, particularly as my name is rather unique. Now I know the price, I can say that it is not worth it. The books I have been offered so far have already been out for a while and can be bought at less than half the monthly subscription price.”

I’m sorry that you had to see the price of your gift when you redeemed your subscription - it’s something some of our other members have mentioned too and we’re working on fixing this so it won’t happen to others in the future, so thanks for giving us the opportunity to improve. If you drop us an email we can show you how to change your settings so your full name isn’t shown on your review in the members’ area. I want to take a moment to address your comment about the value of the subscription as this is something we actually feel really passionately about at Rare Birds. The monthly cost of the subscription works out to the retail price of the book itself and the postage; we avoid discounting the books so that authors are paid fairly for their work. We strongly believe writers should be paid for what they do, and refusing to discount means that every time someone buys a book through us they’re contributing positively to an ecosystem where writers earn enough to live and keep making the art we love. Even though you aren’t a fan of our business, I hope that at the very least it will make you feel good to know the books you received as part of your subscription are supporting some wonderful authors. “Such a wonderful idea. My partner could not believe his luck when he stumbled across it a few days before Christmas. I tend to go for female authors anyway, but I stick to thrillers most of the time. Rare birds has broadened my literary horizons and has helped me discover authors and genres I would have dismissed in the book shop. I will definitely be carrying my subscription on”

“I love the idea of the book club. The book choices are interesting and give you a clear enough idea of the 'mood' of the book without giving away what it is. So it's been a nice surprise each month- and both have been books I don't think I would have picked for myself. I also had a small issue with my book arriving that the service was perfect and I got the book expediated to me within a day. I have only given 3 * because I just don't feel that the cost justifies the reward. The 'debate' section is really just people leaving their reviews. This is the same as something like Goodreads which is free. I feel if perhaps there were book club questions and perhaps even options to join virtual Zoom meetings to discuss the questions, it would make the idea of a book club and debate much more real and would add value. Also small attention to detail things- for example the book I got this month was correct, but the description and book mark that came with it was wrong. This is isn't complaint worth, but it's a small thing that makes a difference. So for £20 a month for a book- it doesn't really make the prices justified.”
