“I have just completed my APM Project Fundamentals Qualification training course and I am hoping to take my exam in the next few days to complete the qualification. Overall, this was a good course and I feel confident about taking my exam. I found that the course materials were helpful and I had printed the handbook in preparation. I would like to suggest that the handbook could have been given to us as pre-course reading, and then the training itself would move away from the slides and focus on case studies, for example. The training took place over two days and was well spaced-out. I would have found it more helpful to have been given tasks, whether that’s independent research tasks, or group tasks. It would have been nice to be put into breakout rooms, for example, as I work remotely and it would have been interesting to have discussions with people outside of my work. It was great to listen to the trainer as she was clearly very knowledgeable but a suggestion would be breaking up the information delivery with little 10 minute tasks, for example. We were given a mock test to complete which was very helpful to go over with the trainer. The mock questions themselves are quite tricky just because they are very wordy and the multiple choice aspect is harder than I anticipated – for many of the questions it seems like any one of the options would have fit the question. However the trainer did explain any of my concerns with them so that was very helpful. Overall I am really glad I have completed this training and I feel confident about my exam so thank you.”

“The SYOB course was not what I expected. I thought it would be a macro strategic overview of the fundamental principles of starting a business. i.e. What is a business plan, how to formulate one; how to research competitors; how to distinguish yourself from the competition; how much money do you need to budget during the initial start-up period; how to ensure compliance with laws such as GDPR, health&safety, how to sell your service/product, how to decide what tasks to perform yourself versus outsource to a professional, pros and cons of a sole trader versus a limited company etc etc. Instead of exploring those topics in detail, the course focused heavily on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and technical aspects of website development and analysis. The instructors spent a little bit of time on some crucial things like selling and email marketing but I would have liked far more time on those and far less time on the technical aspects of web development. Despite not being what I wanted, Tim and Brian did cover a lot of content and mentioned specific platforms/apps/services they use for different aspects of their business. This was useful and it will enable me to find required services in the future without needing to research them from scratch. i.e. using Xero for accounting, Wix for DIY website design etc. I also enjoyed hearing the personal business experiences and lessons learned of Tim and Brian, both of whom have built succesful businesses from scratch. I am disappointed that this course did not cover social media platforms despite the advertised content saying that Day 5 would include an introduction to social media and guidance on how to set-up and use social media properly. This was one aspect I was particularly looking forward to but it was not covered at all. In sum, I would not recommend this course if you are looking for a basic macro introduction to starting your own business. However, if you already have that knowledge and want to focus specifically on the technical details of website development, SEO, and website performance, this course would be ideal. Both Tim and Brian clearly have a wealth of knowledge in this area and they will help you optimise your online presence.”

“Very useful tips & examples for someone like me with little background knowledge. The specialists who spoke to us (accountant & website expert) were helpful in breaking down the type of business you can set up & how to track your expenses & profit. Making sure your website is mobile friendly was a gem for me. Particularly liked the fact Tim is ex-military & has gone through what I’m about to embark on. Useful insights.”

“As an online version of a usually in-person course I felt not enough adaptation to the content and structure was made to improve the experience. Overall, the course was fine but it felt like the last day was rushed. I put this down to too much time being spent on things like double entry book-keeping exposure early on, which people got wrapped around the axle on. As a result, the course Strategic (the operative word) Finance for Non-FInancial Managers was only met to a degree.”
