I joined GEM having had a ludicrous renewal demand from my previous breakdown club who wanted to increase my membership by £113 to £417. GEM offered membership, with analogous benefits, at a level offering a 67% saving, exactly as stated in their advertising. This represents, in my opinion, outstanding value for money and I look forward to a long association with the club.

I used to be a GEM Member many, many years ago, so it is nice to be returning to the fold, so to speak. The booking platform was easy to navigate and offers a simple choice of service, which judging by customer ratings beats all the 'big boys!'

Just joined after seeing excellent reviews so cannot comment on service but it is very good value and a user friendly application process, took five minutes or less. Hopefully we will not need to call for assistance but confident that service will live up to expectations!

This refers only to the process of buying GEM cover: my policy has not yet taken effect so I have no experience of the effectiveness of the breakdown service. Buying cover during corovirus lockdown is not as easy as in normal times, if one needs to discuss something. But I was able to get through to Member Services without delay, and the lady with whom I spoke was polite, pleasant and efficient. I had a query relating to my motorhome; I was asked to hold, briefly, whilst the matter was considered; the matter was resolved and my request for a confirmatory email was granted without hesitation. I bought the cover (pleasantly surprised by the price reduction of "12 moths for the cost of 10" during the coronavirus crisis. The policy documentation is clear. The whole process was easy and much facilitated by the pleasant attitude of the staff. Whilst of course I hope never to have to invoke the cover, let's hope that the efficiency of the rescue arrangements match those of the buying process. The published reviews certainly suggest that they will be. I'd not heard of GEM before doing a web search and finding the reviews. T

Very easy to join, straightforward, albeit fairly limited, cover and reasonable cost. Plus you insure the driver(s), not a specific car, as long as the insured live at the same address, so it's likely to be cheaper than having separate recovery policies for each car in a multi-car household. I hope I don't need to use them, but if I do there's the peace of mind of having somebody to call in an emergency who, on the whole, seem to be getting fairly good reviews. Some media reviews show GEM as coming out on top; others ignore them completely, so how good the service is will likely depend on your circumstances, location, condition of your car and the quality of the appointed technician at the time. I noted that the Auto Express 'Driver Power' survey rated GEM number one with a 90% rating in 2019, so with no previous experience of the company I decided I'd give them a try based on that result. It's worth noting that GEM don't employ their own technicians (unlike AA and RAC), so the quality of recovery service you get will depend on the quality of third-party contractor they call out to help you. Reports of excessive charges by recovery contractors, technicians taking hours to arrive or just not turning up, and difficulties communicating with non-native-English call centre staff seem to be typical complaints behind some of the less good reviews of GEM online and could be a potential worry, but these are anecdotal I can't add anything further by way of first-hand experience as I haven't yet had the need to use the service. I just hope that, should my family have need to use them, they are able to live up to the number one rating awarded to them by users submitting their experiences to the Driver Power survey mentioned above. We'll see!
