I've not had cause to call GEM out yet, so I can't comment on their service. However, their newsletter makes for an interesting read, and suits an older generation of drivers who want motoring information without the 'Top Gear' fluff. However, the biggest benefit this year is the addition of Paypal as a payment mechanism. Well done to whoever decided to do that, it made this years renewal effortless.

Did not find any difficulty using the site but as yet have not tested the service so cannot comment. A bit confused as to why I have had two requests for a review.

Service is great when you need them - but the office team weren't so pleasant when I called about the renewal price. Prepared to overlook that as the rest of the GEM product is good.

Used the service after a breakdown in the last 12 months with an acceptable outcome. However, upon renewal a 10% premium increase is difficult to justify with inflation rates so low.

As a GEM member (but not of the Breakdown service) from reports I have read in the magazine and elsewhere I realise that it is an excellent service. I enrolled for the breakdown service online last evening, I chose and paid for Reclaim. However when I printed off the literature I was most confused. What is Recovery Extra? Will my vehicle be transported to my home if a garage is not open or unable to effect a repair? Recovery must take place at the same time as the call-out, but you will not know if the garage can repair the vehicle so how do you get recovery back to home? If I am driving a hired car do I request Recovery back to the point of hire as the rental company may wish to carry out the repair? Do I still pay my annual membership subscription to GEM for my copy of Good Motoring. I think I need to telephone you as I have more questions.

No problems signing up but of course the experience can only be accurately assessed if the cover is put to the test...hopefully never! Aldo of course when re-new album occurs! Just one point though,the one thing which would improve the joining process would be a member's card..such as the AA provide.This would be good to put inside obe's wallet to always be handy.Much better than the typed piece of paper I now have to use. Sometimes these little things cost very small amounts but can contribute greatly to customers' purchasing experience.

The proof of the pudding ... . It was very easy to join GEM online, but of course I hope never to have to use them. Only then can I give them a true rating on customer service.

Why isn't the rate of IPT shown on this year's documents? Members might presume that any increase is due in part to an IPT rate increase although IPT is still 6%. I presume that you will show IPT at 9.5% on next year's documents to support further increases?

I have been a member for two or three years, so I am a little annoyed to receive a renewal notice with a quotation of £15 above the net web price for the same offer. Why???

It was easy enough to take a recovery package but (if I understand correctly) I was a little disappointed that the "reclaim expenses" scheme only covers up to £70, when recovery can be more costly than this. . I should have studied the terms more closely.

Thank you for your review. Outside a 1/4 mile from your home address breakdowns are fully covered and you will receive a full refund of expenses. If you are at the home address or within a 1/4 mile, lock your keys in the vehicle, misfuel, had an accident or suffer theft or vandalism there is a limit of £70.00 reimbursement. GOOD COMPANY FOR RECOVERY EXCEPT IF YOU HAVE A 12 FOOT TRAILOR INSTEAD OF A 10 FOOT FIND THIS OUT IN THE SMALL PRINT YOU GET FOOLED WHEN YOU SEE THE ADVERT WITH A 25 FOOT CARAVAN BEING TOWED ANYWAY £525 POUNDS LATER I I HAVE LEARNT A LESSON ANOTHER COMPANY YOU CANT TRUST AGAIN READ THE SMALL PRINT D NASH

On your Website the Premium quoted for new customers are cheaper then renewal Premium for existing for same Cover. So this means that at the expanse of existing customers, the new customers are enjoying cheaper Premiums.

I thought I would go with GEM due the price, I had a breakdown at my daughters school and I have to say the customer service was horrible the man kept repeating everything I said as you can imagine the last thing you want to do is repeat information that they should already have and you trying to get help asap. I got very frustrated with the man as I was late picking up my daughter and they were going to close the school gates. But once the breakdown came the man fixed the car it was a flat battery he changed it there and then, I was satisfied with the service from that point. I will give them another go, but will be keeping an eye on them because value is not everything quality is
