ULaw is progressive and between my time there and now, considering the beginnings of setting up locations in Berlin, the quality has only gotten better and I think students can really benefit from taking advantage of the opportunities here.

I studied the accelerated LPC and it was disorganised from beginning to end. We weren’t considered in decision making for the whole university. In particular, we were toyed around re the administration of our exams was a mess (during Covid) with some cancelled just days before and then had to sit all of our exams in the summer with essentially no refresher classes. This also meant we finished our courses later than had been planned. The groups sponsored by the magic circle firms received extra materials that weren’t available to us. The teachers were generally good but taught us how to answer an exams questions rather than any deeper understanding. The administrators were actively unhelpful when I asked for adjustments to accommodate my anxiety, and they didn’t send my degree certificate until almost two years after I completed my course. I would not go back in a hurry.

I did the MA in Law online. Overall its a good course. The online is difficult to manage though and sometimes you feel that you are just sent the books and you are teaching yourself. Some tutors are great, go the extra mile, others have no interest. The course was a good option to do during Covid, but for a better experience, I would suggest either the university amends its online course to be more interactive, or to take an in person course if you can. You miss out on a lot when you end up reading from a book on your own. The IT issues as well with the university were never ending, even during exams and that was unfortunate and stressful, though eventually resolved. Overall good course, but management and communication could be greatly improved.

I did the online LPC and it was horrendous. My strong advice to anyone considering an online course here is don’t. However, I know students who completed attended courses and their experience has been much better. My poor rating is based on my own experience while on the online LPC.

The Moorgate campus, where I studied the GDL, was light, airy and modern. The teaching was generally good, occasionally great and sometimes poor. Tutors were able to deliver the set workshops, which are high quality, but were not good at explaining what needed to be on the page. My academic background strongly indicates that with better instruction I was perfectly capable of a Distinction which, as a career changer, was the ticket I needed. I managed a Commendation but as a former teacher, I am clear that this was largely a result of a lack of understanding of the staff about the difference between 'delivery' (good to adequate) and 'teaching' (a skill which many tutors did not embody). The marking guide they kept pointing us to was beyond useless. The GDL is a difficult balance to strike as it basically represents three undergrad years in a nine-month course. The course is good for people who already know what they are doing, which I would for the next level up. That said, I would basically recommend the university. The careers team are dedicated and very practical; there are many opportunities for pro bono and for finding out about the profession. The university dealt well with the pandemic from my point of view, and I'd definitely return to do the LPC if the opportunity arose.

I studied my GDL online which was an excellent course. The online teaching at UL I could not fault. I studied the LPC at the Guildford Campus and again all the teaching was excellent. There is a lot of student support and the tutors I found all really helpful and supportive. During lockdown a huge amount of work went into keeping the course going and adapting teaching and exams to give us weekly online seminars so we could take the exams without any delays. The courses are not cheap but the teaching materials including the books are a great introduction to the subject and I still refer to them now on occasion . I only attended the GDL graduation, I have to say it is too big at the Barbican and it would be lovely if the ceremonies could be kept smaller in some way, one of the reasons why I did not attend the LPC ceremony which is a great shame.

I cannot fault the teaching staff at Ulaw who are extremely experienced and helpful. The careers service (in Exeter) is fantastic. The pro bono opportunities are good. The above is all thanks to the hard working lawyers/lecturers. However during my studies, and in preparation for graduation, the administration of both the GDL and LPC was chaotic and unreliable. The university showed me no support or loyalty when I was unable to get a ticket to my LPC graduation. Complaints are unwelcomed. It does seem that profit is prioritised over experience.

The teaching is good quality. The teaching staff/lecturers are all great - explain the subject well and make difficult/complex topics easy to understand. Teaching staff are also responsive to emails when you have queries and are always happy to help. The assessments team and the Leeds administrative team are very unhelpful - leading to a lower review rating. They are difficult to get hold of, provide very delayed responses which are often unhelpful. As a disabled student, I had to liaise with both teams a lot and found their lack of care/ engagement difficult.

The University was the best choice for me! The Bristol campus is fairly small but it means you get the benefit of smaller class sizes and tutors that have ample time for you whether that be in class or in your spare time. The campus is also really close to Temple Meads train station which makes commuting ideal. The tutors are all fantastic and the law degree itself really sets you up for further study/employment by being very practical. The course focuses on learning the law and then applying it to legal scenarios. There is no legal theory/jurisprudience that you might get at more prestigious unis, as that doesn’t resemble what you will do as a lawyer in practice. There is also a high chance that if you want to be a lawyer you will have to do the SQE or BPC at Ulaw anyway, so by studying my undergraduate degree here I have already got used to the learning style and assessment process! In addition during the pandemic the university was able to seamlessly switch to online learning as they already have an online campus and so there was no disruption in my teaching, which cant be said for other institutions.

I am a third year student studying the LLB at the Bristol campus of the University of Law. The University provides excellent teaching on all their courses as well as amazing student support. There is a designated employability team based at every campus to help you to secure employment after your degree as well as wellbeing teams to provide any help that you might need. I would 100% recommend the University of Law to any prospective student!!
