“Very long wait times... Delivery is left boxed...no unpacking or helping to put.in.place as other more attentive stores do..i was left to unbox sofas and heavy items alone as i was considered out of area! delivery men do not take precautions to protect your floor or wear shoe covers.”

“Returns policy is extremely poor and inflexible. Was bought a large clock as a Christmas gift which sadly was too large for the wall and when we tried to return the item still boxed was told it was outside the return date and we were stuck with it. Still on sale at the store. Very disappointing and has put me off doing any more business with BS.”

“I bought the lamp online, before it arrived it had been reduced and I sent an email enquiring if due to the short period (1 day) between paying full price to the reduction could I please have the difference repaid to me? I have never received any response. I am a frequent shopper at John Lewis and the customer service at barker and stone house has only made me only purchase household items and furniture from John Lewis or Fenwicks in the future.”

“Some good quality furniture, some very poor quality. The good was the Black Ash Cannelle dining table and the Purcell armchair. Both excellent. The Vivika five-drawer narrow and six-drawer wide bedroom units are both great, but the Vivika double wardrobe has been problematic. The first one arrived damaged and had fittings missing. This was duly exchanged and the second wardrobe was assembled. The last piece out of the box was a door which was again damaged. Not wanting to take it all apart again just for one door, as Barker & Stonehouse wanted to replace the whole wardrobe, with additional weeks of waiting for a replacement, I have decided to live with the damage. The really bad one though is the Kinsey dining chairs. Bought four at nearly £600 and they are awful. Definitely not the same quality as the ones I tested in the Hull store. I don't mind paying for quality, but these are rubbish. Dining with family and friends is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, but not on these chairs. The cushion seats are all collapsed so you sit directly on the wooden frame, not comfortable at all, and the joints on one chair are so loose it's no longer safe to use. These were bought in November so I do not know if they can be returned at this stage. It's the experience of these dining chairs that have stopped me from going back to Barker & Stonehouse for additional furniture. Meanwhile, I hunt for some comfortable dining chairs wherever they might be.”

“The dining table we received looked lovely - delivery and assembly was good, however there was no protection on the raw wood. We had a care plan and were advised by B&S to just use mats. Which we did however it is totally impractical for a family dining table - anything from water to yoghurt and milk stained the table (Palu). Over a short period (6 weeks ) we accumulated several unavoidable stains just from normal living. We claimed and spent some weeks negotiating between the care plan and B&S both refusing to take responsibility. Eventually, we got a new table which is a good outcome. however we have taken matters into our own hands and used a neutral oil to protect the table. It is a little darker in colour however we have had not one stain since having the 2nd table and are much happier. B&S you need to seriously rethink your advise to customers regarding protecting natural wood tables.”

“Very good service from start to finish. Staff at all stages kept up good communication and were friendly and professional. Chairs purchased were of high quality and also good value compared with similar at other companies. Only reason I have not given top rating was due to a long wait for delivery (but that was due to global delivery issues at time ). I will definitely use B & S again and would gladly recommend.”
