I ordered timber for a DIY project via the new* Arnold Laver online ordering system and, whilst the product itself is very good, the end to end ordering process is a bit of a shambles. *Previously tried to order online before but prevented from doing so as I am not an account holder, e.g house-builder contractor, sub-contractor, joiner, plumber, etc. The above statement is a clue to why I have rated the service as poor. For a start, I was to be notified within 2 working days that my order was ready for collection - I wasn't and had to ring for status of the order. I was informed the order was ready to collect and went round to my local depot to do so; and here lies the real problem for Arnold Laver v the established DIY players. 1: 'Store Entry' badly signposted. 2: Web order collection point is non-existent. 3: Sales desk staff show no interest in DIY/small sales customers. 4: When finally served, I was told to 'go see Bob next door for your order'. How was I supposed to identify Bob??? All yard staff wear identical hi-vis jackets and no name tags. 5: Identified the order myself, picked it up, carried it outside and left. The shame about the whole episode is that the price and quality of the timber is so much better than the main DIY chains. A real opportunity exists for Arnold Laver within the online marketplace but they will need to set up a proper sales delivery process for a different type of customer if they are to truly succeed.

Ordering was simple enough and very fast response, so excellent online systema and great customer service. However it was let down when I went to collect the goods. Located easy enough was told to go outside and find Dave of old whoever. Waited for 20 mins no sign of anyone. Was told they're on a break at 12.20. Was told to wait until he loads the truck, waited another 20 mins and finally told they're cutting my wood. If the goods were ready why didn't they tell me this beforehand? In total I was there for 90mins. Very poor service at the pick up point and don't think I'll be going back. It's a pity as the service online was excellent.

Excellent Service and prices! My experience with Laver has been a pleasure from start to finish. After looking all over the internet, I finally found the best prices for wood at Laver. They were not only the cheapest, but also, when they didn't have the the exact lengths I wanted, they got in touch with me and told me that they would give me longer planks at the same price as the shorter ones. They delivered within 2 days. The quality of the wood was excellent. In short, I am very happy with the product and the service.

Laver - absolutely fine. Unfortunately I used Laver to purchase some Cheshire Mouldings handrails that came direct from CM already packaged and I collected them from Laver at Rainham. Had approximately 30% scrap so it's a good job I ordered spare lengths and only needed to get one 1200mm length out of each 1800mm length supplied. Only just made it without having to buy some more. Spindles were OK but the handrail - total rubbish.

I purchased some boards from your company online and was sent an e-mail to say i would be contacted in two days to arrange delivery, i didn't hear anything for six days so i phoned to find out what had happened, and i'm so glad i did as i hadn't received the e-mail you sent me to say the boards were being delivered on the Friday so if i hadn't phoned you there would have been no-one in to receive the delivery and I would of had to pay again for delivery, although the boards were good quality and very reasonably priced, i think i would be wary of ordering from you again.

Before buying I emailed a question - it was answered promptly and clearly. The gent Steve at Reading could not have been more helpful regarding the cutting which I had requested and he deserves great praise for his consideration and thoroughness. I couldn't have asked for more.

Very warped to the point of being almost unusable. At least it was cheap, but then again, it wasn't worth paying a penny more for.

Materials good quality, arrived soon after I ordered them, I was informed when they would arrive and they came on time, delivery driver exceptionally helpful and professional. First time using Laver. Will use again and recommend to others.

I ordered a shed door last weekend, on Monday the Reading store rang to advise that they would not get the door in until 8th November and that they would ring me when it is available for collection. Brian Haley

Well, I was pleased with the initial help I received from Laver, and was pleased to find the 95mm decking I required as I was having trouble finding it elsewhere. It was moved from another depot somewhere up north and I was told I would be contacted with a delivery date. Well a week or so later the delivery turned up at 8 am without any notice. Today I have received an email from Laver offering me 10% off my first order, would have been nice but have already paid for the order without the discount. Maybe they will give me the 10% back!!

Whilst the quality of the materials supplied was to the expected standard the service regarding delivery was poor. The requested delivery date could not be achieved as some items were out of stock at the branch. However we were not notified of this and only became aware after contacting the branch. The new delivery date also proved wrong as the materials were available two days earlier but again this was not confirmed but discovered when once again checking with the branch. Finally we received email notification of dispatch but 4 days after the goods had in fact been delivered.

great service - expensive shipping - im sure that with such good service Lavers would do a fine mail order business especially for such unusual items that i ordered. If i had the luxury of being able to wait I would have ordered elsewhere as the delivery cost was prohibitive, and as such i would have to think twice about return custom for the type of purchase.

Had to put poor due to poor communication, Given a long lead time by email so call to see what problem is, answer lengths of timber ordered not in stock, no problem what have you got in stock ok no problem change order, ahh you must email stock control. Did this and requested call back. NO Reply so call again. Timber has been ordered from a different branch so you will have to wait a week delivery may be Tuesday or wednesday. Then get a call should be Tuesday but you'll just have to sit about all day and wait in to see if it comes but if it doesn't it should come Wednesday. Will never order via the net again, looks like going back to jewsons next time. Total lack of communication When you've got jobs to do you cant sit about for days waiting to see if a delivery is coming
